Established by BOCHK and sponsored since 2022, the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize recognises scientists and research teams for breakthrough discoveries that have had an exceptional effect on society. This merit-based award encourages scientific researchers in Hong Kong and throughout Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao to pursue new innovative avenues of inquiry and apply their research findings towards bettering humanity.

Ng Siew Chien was honored with the Life and Science Award for developing noninvasive tests to detect early signs of gastrointestinal tract disorders and autism spectrum disorder, making her the first female scientist ever honored with this prize since its establishment. Other winners include Zhang Hua for contributions in phase engineering of nanomaterials for 3D micro- and nanofabrication as well as Chen Shih-chi for developing innovative data and AI security technologies.

Teachers in Hong Kong secondary schools may nominate up to 10 of their student artists to enter, with each nominated student required to submit three artworks by the submission deadline that comply with our T&C and competition rules. Our panel of judges will shortlist these submissions, awarding one team of student artists the Judges Prize (HK$8,000) while also awarding one artist with the most votes from the public (HK$10,000).

Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School students won the highest prize, which was worth HK$8,000, for their project entitled: “The Development of Hong Kong’s Pig Farming Industry during the 1967 Riots”. Other outstanding projects by Carmel Pak U Secondary School and Tak Oi Secondary School included Frontier Restricted Area Relations Between China and Hong Kong as well as “The Canton-Hong Kong Strike and 1967 Riots”.

Each winner will be honored with an engraved gold medal and their project team could earn up to HK$100,000. Additionally, shortlisted projects will be displayed during a ceremony in June.

The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize Selection Committee is comprised of prominent academics from universities in the Greater Bay Area. Their task involves reviewing and interpreting articles of THE PRIZE CHARTER, suggesting important scientific research fields for consideration by THE PRIZE, selecting award winners, and any violations to the Prize Chart or professional ethics which result in disqualification.
