The Sidney Prize recognizes and rewards outstanding investigative journalism that exposes social or economic injustice. Each month’s recipient will be awarded $500, along with a bottle of union-made wine and an elegant certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Hillman Foundation, a left-of-center organization that awards financial prizes since 1950 to journalists “who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in the public interest”. The prize is named in honour of Sidney Hillman, president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America – an early predecessor to both Unite Here and Workers United (now SEIU) – who led American labor movements and often found himself under attack from conservative critics. Today his foundation oversees by board composed of both workers as well as members of Democratic party including former Sen. Harry Reid and actor Danny Glover.
At the conclusion of LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience held Jan 21-24 in Chicago, AJL unveiled their 2024 Sydney Taylor Book Awards winners. Administered by the Association of Jewish Libraries and named after All-of-a-Kind Family series author Sydney Taylor, these awards honor titles for children and teenagers that embody high literary standards while accurately reflecting Jewish experiences.

Short stories up to 3000 words long that center around travel are eligible. Overland will publish all winning and runner-up pieces, selected from our shortlist, in its autumn issue and online platform. Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh served as judges and selected eight pieces from our shortlist as candidates. From these eight pieces they selected one winner and two runners-up stories; Overland wishes to thank everyone involved with submitting entries and acknowledge all their hard work in upholding integrity of judging process.
