The Sidney Prize is an annual journalism award presented by the Hillman Foundation to “journalists, writers and public figures who seek social justice and public policy for the common good.” The prize recognizes those using both traditional and new media forms to expose injustice or assist those in need; journalists whose work promotes tolerance among Americans or encourages civil discourse between different communities are also honored with this prize; their recipient will receive $50,000.

The Hillman Foundation is an independent, private grant-making institution established to honor Sidney Myer, labor leader and philanthropist, for his dedication to social reform. Their annual prize includes SEIU Prize for Reporting Racial and Economic Justice as well as U.S Hillman Prize and Canadian Hillman Prize awards. With headquarters in San Francisco California and affiliation with National Fund for Community Partnerships.

After his death, an annual prize was established in his name to recognize “an outstanding essay that explores the social and economic impact of technology on human life”. Essays published either print or online may qualify for this competition and its winner receives $30,000; first runner-up receive $5,000 while second runner-up are given $2,000. Judges consisting of experts in their fields will review these essays and select one winner each year.

Each year, the university presents the Sidney Black Engineering Award in memory of this pioneer to female graduating engineering students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, personal qualities, and contributions to student/university life. It is open only to graduating BEng students studying on any of our BEng programs.
